Can you imagine William Shatner living in a car? What about Jim Carrey?

Unbelievable as it sounds, these famous people were homeless at one time and slept in their vehicles. Read on and discover the parts they played in those days.

To most of us, William Shatner will always be Captain James T. Kirk of Star Trek fame. Although it lasted only three seasons, the TV series gained a huge cult following and spawned several blockbuster films that have made Shatner a household name in many parts of the world today.

But before he commandeered the starship Enterprise to boldly go where no man has gone before, the Emmy Award-winning actor, director and bestselling author spent three months living in cars just to see the United States during summer break at McGill University in Canada.

Together with a male friend, Shatner - who was a freshman at that time - hitchhiked across the United States and slept in different places, including the beach.

When Star Trek was cancelled, the actor went to the east coast in search of work. He lived in a camper with his dog, a Doberman pinscher, who kept him company during those difficult years.

"I had three children and an ex-wife to support and I was just about broke. I lived out of the back of my truck, under a hard shell. It had a little stove, a toilet, and I'd drive from theater to theater. The only comfort came from my dog, which sat in the passenger seat and gave me perspective on everything," he said.

Funnyman Jim Carrey is best remembered for comedy hits like "Ace Ventura: Pet Detective", "The Mask" and "Dumb and Dumber." But life for the rubber-faced comedian wasn't always happy.

Before his big break as the "resident white man" in the TV series "In Living Color", Carrey lived in Volkswagen van that he shared with older brother John Carrey, older sister Rita Carrey, and parents Percy Carrey and Kathleen Carrey. They had no permanent address as their home was wherever their van took them.

Luckily for Carrey, he had big dreams and worked hard on to fulfill them. The rest is history for the man who now commands millions of dollars per picture.
