The music business goes in cycles and that means that what was once old is now new again. There are various triggers that can cause a resurgence of certain types of music and the fans of the resurging music always take the opportunity to show their pride in their favorite forms of music by bringing out the t-shirts they used to wear that show their favorite bands.
Initially it appeared that hip hop would remain the favorite genre for the coming generations; yet beneath the rhymes and beats was the sound of vintage groups, which hip hop stylists sampled and integrated. Young folks hearing hip hop music were for a long while clueless that they were really hearing riffs by Aerosmith or samples of Journey tunes. That is, until the launch of video games like Guitar Hero.
Guitar Hero, Rock Band, and many other interactive music video games use the vintage music of classic rock as their soundtrack. So now, all of a sudden, kids could name all those samples they had heard. Suddenly, they were given exposure to a music that was completely new to them - classic rock. They embraced it instantly.
It was not long before the video game companies started offering more songs for kids to buy and add to their Guitar Hero catalog and, for the most part, these were classic rock songs. The parents saw this and started breaking out their vintage rock t-shirts to wear because their kids now found classic rock to be appealing just like the parents did when they were younger. The kids saw the parents wearing vintage rock t-shirts, they saw the characters on the Guitar Hero video game wearing them, and they decided they wanted them to.
It usually happens that when a band releases a new record their t-shirts start selling and their back catalog of music starts selling again as well. Imagine taking that concept and multiplying by the number of classic rock bands available and you suddenly have a resurgence in the sale of vintage rock t-shirts. These video games were like the re-issue of all of that guitar based classic rock and suddenly t-shirts and CDs started selling again like crazy.
As the new generation of kids begins to rediscover parts of their parents' childhoods, it signals a revival for some of what the older generation reveres. Guitar Hero has succeeded in returning classic rock to the forefront, and kids today are sporting vintage rock t-shirts depicting groups from a couple decades back. Young people are purchasing the songs and also discovering affection for vinyl records, causing their own revival.
It would have been hard to predict that the very thing parents have been complaining about for years could be the very vehicle for bringing parts of their childhoods to their kids. Parents have been convinced for years that video games are bringing down their children's generation and now that video games have brought back classic rock and vintage rock t-shirts many parents are starting to rethink their views on video games.
Hip hop probably won't be disappearing from the music industry, but it is kind of funny to see the former DMX t-shirt kids listening to classic rock and sporting vintage rock t-shirts. Guitar Hero and similar games are just one example of how iconic bands and singers of previous generations can reemerge in a new, trendy outlet of current generations. It's hard to say how, but undoubtedly someone will ensure that vintage classic rock t-shirts will make a surge among the youth of the world again.
