Carl Laemmle began a Chicago based movie theater back in 1906 showing a variety of silent but short films on his big screen. Wanting something more, he set out in 1909 to start making some films of his on and started the Independent Moving Picture Company in New York where his first film was Hiawatha. In all likelihood you're not going to find a copy of Hiawatha any time soon, but you can discover 1000's of Universal Pictures movies at Netfilx rental review.

Carl wanted the entire country to see his films and he knew the only ay to do this was to move to Hollywood and build his empire. With the New York Studios still operational, he bought Nestor Studios and founded the Universal Film Marketing Company which he would then merge his New York based company as well as 5 others into it.

So now he had his east coast studios as well as his west coast ones but knew he also needed to conquer the central part of the country. So he set out to hire Isadore Bernstein to find and purchase 230 acres in Los Angeles where he built Universal City which was inaugurated in March of 1915.

Carl Laemmle retired in 1936, selling his studios to the Standard Capital Company. Then in 1946, the east and west coast theaters would be officially merged creating the Universal International Studios Company. Their first Academy Award was for Best Picture when the studios released the film Hamlet back in 1947.

A short time later in 1952, Universal International was sold to Decca Records which created Decca Universal. This new company focused on music rather then film and would then again be bought out by the Music Corporation of America who would turn it into a large music studio. They would become the biggest talent agency in the music industry and by the 1960 were able to return to the company's roots and start developing films once again.

In 1991, Matsushita Electrical Industrial Company Ltd. purchased MCA and a short time later in 1996; Seagram would take over though purchasing the majority of shares. They would then change the name to Universal studios, sell off the television division to the USA Network and separate the music division into Universal Music Group. By 2000 the Vivendi and Canal Company took over control of Universal making them and international communications and media company. One other revenue stream that generates large amounts of turnover is best dvd rentals.
