I have always been curious about where those unforgettable scenes and breathtaking locations of well-known films were shot. It is no secret the Cotswolds was the inspiration behind many real and fantasy pictures like Bridget Jones's Diary, Pride and Prejudice, James Bond's Die Another Day, Vanity Fair and the well-liked Harry Potter movies. Here is a short introduction to this fascinating countryside.

The Cotswolds is totally enclosed in natural beauty; this ancient district of England is generally recognized for its history and legacy. Experienced travelers will be happy to see the wonderful sights like sleepy villages, bustling market places and old-world surroundings.

Officially declared as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) in 1966, it is one of the largest of 40 AONBs in England and Wales since the environment remains unspoiled. Here are noteworthy locations which inspired some Hollywood producers, from James Bond to Bridget Jones' Diary films.

Bridget Jones' Diary (2000) a comedy starring Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant was filmed on location in the charming village of Snowshill in Gloucestershire. The setting of the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry of the Harry Potter movies was filmed on Gloucester Cathedral. Most of the school scenes took place at the prestigious Oxford University. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007), The Madness of King George (1994) were also filmed on location in Oxford City.

Bourton-on-the-Water, widely known as the "little Venice" of the Cotswolds, became the location for the ice chase scenes of the action movie Die Another Day (2002). The unforgettable car chase scenes were filmed on the runway of the Royal Air Force aircraft at the Upper Rissington. Remains of the Day (1993) starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson made Badminton House and Dyrham Park near Chippenham the set of this movie. A number of scenes were taken in Corsham Court in Wiltshire.

Outstanding films like the Stardust (2007) starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert de Niro were also done in Cotswolds. The grandeur of Berkeley Castle came alive on the big screen on scenes from The Other Boleyn Girl, wherein Natalie Portman has joined the cast alongside Scarlett Johannson. Bath City was the prominent location for The Duchess featuring Keira Knightley.

The extraordinary tale of Vanity Fair (2004) was filmed in Stanway House near Winchcombe in Bath. The Libertine (2004) starring Johnny Depp as the romantic Earl of Rochester was also filmed in the same location. Luckington Court near Chippenham in Wiltshire came alive on the big screen in Pride and Prejudice (2005).

This historic area was chosen as the film location in many epic movies. It's fascinating to be around these places where famous movie scenes were made and at the same time tourists get to travel around and enjoy the breathtaking Cotswolds countryside.
